Falls are the primary cause of injury-related deaths among adults aged 65 and older. With the CDC’s Stopping Elderly Accidents, Deaths & Injuries (STEADI) tool, patients can assess their fall risk and take necessary precautions to reduce it. You can help protect your older patients from future falls by informing them about this tool and educating them on how to use it, conducting comprehensive medication reviews to identify medications (e.g., sedatives, hypnotics) that increase their risk, and counseling them on proper lighting, footwear, and flooring to reduce their fall risk. Check out our latest newsletter and the CDC website at https://www.cdc.gov/steadi/index.html to learn more about falls and how you can support your patients.
